Youth Hope

Hatua trust focuses on developing youth programs around civic engagement that will enable them to participate actively in their communities. This also includes enabling the youth to gain access to officials or resources set aside for their use by government as well as taking advantage of resources in their communities that can empower them to take charge of their lives.

Low levels of education are amongst the key factors affecting young people’s inability to access opportunities that enable them to be productively engaged in society. Their inability to find jobs worsens the situation resulting in high crime, violence, and a range of health issues including drug abuse. General youth engagement also happens within formal structures and yet the most vulnerable youth, the group that Hatua Trust targets, operates outside these formal structures, it differs from their style and their general lingua and that disconnect continues to exacerbate their exclusion. There are numerous government interventions to remedy the situation such as government youth empowerment centers, ICT centers and even enterprise training and financing which have low uptake among youth. Hatua trust will focus on developing youth programs around civic engagement that will enable them to participate actively in their communities.

Strategic Goal (2021-2025): To empower youth to optimize on local resources and the available opportunities provided by government, for them to take charge of their lives.

Under this strategic goal, the key interventions will include:

  • Providing information to youth on the various government opportunities available and how to engage in the same.
  • Promoting the oversight role of youth on the various opportunities in the community including accountability of youth  funds, social audits on youth related projects, etc.
  • Ensuring youth participation in the governance processes.
